Dear Ms. Killebrew,
My name is Kaiyes Bhuiyan, and I am currently a freshman at the CUNY City College of New York. Though I am currently an undecided student, I hope to be a Psychiatrist or Cardiologist. I became invested in becoming a student of the sciences from a young age. I would stay up late at night watching science documentaries like NOVA on PBS ever since I can remember. Along with my love for science, I am an ardent lover of writing. I hope that in this class I will be able to learn how to be a more didactic writer and researcher. The skills of Writing for Sciences especially are imperative to my desire to pursue the medical field. I believe that this class will be able to teach me what is necessary to address and express diagnoses eloquently and definitively. Not only in my writing but in understanding scientific research as well, the skills of this class are necessary for creating an understanding of scientific language.
My desire to be a doctor has stemmed from my family’s history of receiving fatal diagnoses. I have seen that in third world countries, such as Bangladesh where my family is from, there is a need for doctors who not only understand medicine but aren’t corrupt as well. I hope that I can help to fund and improve the lack of access to affordable and proper medical care in countries like mine. In America, I hope I can be the best possible Cardiologist and Psychiatrist that I can be. Coming from a family with many heart-related problems, as well as one with many mental health issues, suffering from anxiety myself, I wish to be able to help families to understand what they face, and face it properly, with understanding.
My abilities with the English language are restricted mostly to casual writings for my own desires. I am an ardent lover of poetry and am a poet myself. Most of my other writings are restricted to short stories and occasional class writing assignments. Aside from poetry, I am an amateur photographer and videographer, and a bathroom singer. As such, I am a devoted fan of Bollywood movies and music, something which has been foundational throughout my upbringing in a South Asian household. At times, my poetry and writing reflect the culture that surrounds my South Asian identity especially my Bengali heritage, and Islamic upbringing that surrounds my life. I look to great writers such as Rabindranath Tagore and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay for my short stories, and great poets such as Rumi and Tabrizi for my poetry. To me, their linguistic abilities, even if another language, are unparalleled by any other modern writers in the world. I hope that my time in this class will help me to build my palette as an academic and linguistic connoisseur. I hope that I can combat my grammatical errors and rectify any trivial mistakes in my writing. By staying focused and attentive to the information in class, as well as writing using scientific language, I hope to become a better writer.
Sincerely,
Kaiyes Bhuiyan
