Marijuana has been a taboo topic in the U.S for many decades now. One thing that stays with the increasing popularity of both recreational and medical marijuana and its legalization in the state, we see a disparity in the way African Americans are treated as opposed to Caucasians. Despite Caucasians partaking in recreational use of marijuana more often than African Americans, they are more likely to not be arrested for usage, even in states where marijuana has been legalized. To prove my point, as well as to capture the viewers’ attention, I incorporated a color palette of greens, white and black. Through the usage of the green shades, I can relate the infographic to the usage of marijuana, a green plant. To prevent the audience from losing interest in the subject and the infographic, I chose to limit the amount of excess information and focused on the crux of the issue.
As someone who has grown up in a colored part of New York City, and in a neighborhood that is rapidly being gentrified, I have seen firsthand the difference between the treatments of African Americans as opposed to Caucasians. Before its gentrification, most African Americans would suffer at the hands of police brutality, however, now that Caucasians entered our neighborhood, the difference in treatment is shocking. With the entrance of Caucasians came the use of increased drugs being used by the Caucasians, however, there are significantly fewer arrests for the same and sometimes more serious offenses committed by Caucasians. I hope that through my infographic the public will be able to see this difference in treatment, and even the Caucasian community can understand their privilege and take accountability for this treatment disparity.
